Gemma Kahng

New York Fashion Week 2014.

Last night I attended Gemma Khang's  presentation of her Fall 2014 collection at Rox Gallery. My friend has been acting as her right hand women helping put together this demanding fashion collection so she invited a group of us along to witness all the hard work. The details and shapes of the garments were stunning and a credit to both designer and design assistant. Inspirational shapes, intricate detailing, fur, leather and opacity were shown in a variety of different formations with attention drawing from everything including the lace tights and dark grecian hear wear.
Tell me a New Yorker who doesn't die over a strict color palette of Black and White…. exactly, so as you can imagine this collection went down a storm with the NY attendees. With fur, leather and length being a reoccurring theme on models AND viewers the collection showed a fashion forward, edgy and dramatic start to New York's Fall '14 collections.

A powerful force

I don't know what it is about a male frame draped in certain clothing that makes me go weak at the knees. I am attempting to describe in text the feeling I get when a well dressed man walks past me on the street without sounding like a complete nutcase but I can't seem to manage it. It's like I fall in love for that moment with the clothing, I mean yes it helps if I find the man in the clothing attractive (maybe he is sporting a beard?!) but it's not the face or the personality that's selling it to me- it's the fabric items of clothing... Is that weird?

So its that time of year again in NY (oh dear)- Fashion week. But not only fashion week its fashion week in the Winter. This just adds fuel to the fire. Not only will male frames be draped appropriately in luxurious fabric in perfect silhouettes, but hats are being worn with glasses and scarves with tailored suits…. HELP ME.

I realise in this post I sound like a deranged singleton but I really can't help it, is it my hormones?… probably or do I have a superior desire for menswear thats at risk of making itself known the next time a Wang clad male walks past me in the street.

ADVICE FOR MEN- You may not be able to change the shape and look of your face (sorry) BUT you can buy yourself a Pea coat. It's most definitely the most important item of your wardrobe this Winter- and if your pennies stretch buy yourself a beanie hat to make the ladies hearts sing a bit more.

Bill Cunningham for NY Times

I have blogged about Bill before and rattled on about his expertise in fashion photography, so see this post as a follow up.
Here is his NY times video channel where he uploads montages of snapshots of women and men's fashion on the streets of New York. Although his timid photos may not be as high resolution and well staged as the current generation of bloggers, his shaky and rugged style of photography allows you to focus on the realness and the reason for the photograph, instead of all the frills around the edges.
Its just endearing really to see an older man who is still running the streets of NY and eagerly spotting the latest trends - an inspiration to us all.

Phillip Lim Pre-Fall 2014

Phillip Lim Pre-Fall 2014

I must admit daring color combos are not my forte- Enter Phillip Lim who clearly knows exactly what he is doing when it comes to mixing colors and textures. Don't you agree that his Pre-Fall 14 collection just makes you want to go touch every garment just to feel how soft, velvety and expensive they feel- well it does me and if you get the same urge PLEASE make sure that cronut you secretly scoffed after lunch isn't still present on your finger tips, we don't want any immaculate works of art tarnished by grubby little fingers.
